Off The Vine, Fine Wines

May 2nd, 2008

It’s been a long week, but why whine when there’s wine, n’est ce pas?

Wine has become easier to find and buy thanks to ecommence, but for the initiate, or the aficionado, there’s still that issue of how to get recommendations without mugging for the sommelier. Are you ready? Yup, Listio’s got what you need.

Perhaps the easiest on the eyes (wine sites seem to like the color red) is Snooth, the community based webware that lets you rank, tag, comment, and buy wines. The simple interface makes it easier to buy and find wines that suit your taste, as users tag wines with those oh-so-flowery adjectives. Aromatic, spiced, strawberry, supple, classy - you get the idea. Sometimes you can’t figure out if you want to drink it or buy it a drink, which is where the SnoothRank, comments, and forums come in. With Snooth, you’re also only one click from buying, making Snooth a young, lively, but strong web 2.0 site with hints of ginger.

Runner up on the wine vine, is Vinorati, which relies more on users to build up descriptions and ratings. Where there is no one click linking to wine sellers, Vinorati gives much of the information that Snooth does. A distraction for us was the color scheme (you guessed it, red), but it is a resource for the wine lover. Honorable mention goes to Woot!, one of the better number of new wine sites.
