Carbonmade: Simple Portfolio Management
As one might gather from his first visit to Carbonmade’s colorful site, Carbonmade has been designed with ease and simplicity in mind. For the user that wants to manage their portfolio this translates to a quick, no frills setup.
With Carbonmade, as with any webservice, there is a requisite signup, but during that signup you will see that Carbonmade offers you a unique url for your page (yourname.carbonmade.com). If you opt for the free service you will be able to upload five projects and thirty five images (including Flash) for free. The paid version, at $12 a month, allows 500 high resolution images, 10 videos, and 50 projects. From there the setup is what you expect; name your project (an image set by any other name), upload up to five images at a time, and add your comments.
Simplicity has its detractions, and Carbonmade is quick to experience these. As a viewer, your options are to go forward or back - there are no areas to comment or give feedback - and as the portfolio manager, there are no way to alter the layout. To be sure there are the standard set of options; the ability to make the presentation public or private, adding notes to a project, or turning on a thumbnail view for visitors, yet the paucity of tools to assist the portfolio manager make Carbonmade little more than a viewer.
Carbonmade is popular among artists, where the directory is listed by skill or areas of expertise. Freelancers will delight at a flag that appears on their portfolio listing reading “Available for freelancing,” making it easier for jobs to find them. Artists that have strong appeal may also get a Featured banner reading “Awesome,” and recently updated portfolios are labeled with an orange banner saying “updated.” There are thousands of portfolios currently visible in the categories of the directory. The artists and you may enjoy that with Carbonmade there is no learning curve — it is just what it purports to be, a simple, straightforward portfolio manager.
