Viewbook: Online Presentation And Portfolio Tool

July 30th, 2008

Viewbook LogoDesigned for presentations, Viewbook is a portfolio manager with tools to customize the look of your graphic portfolios. With streamlined features, a unique url, and embeddable Flash, Viewbook is a professional alternative to more community-based portfolio managers. It begins with signing into Viewbook, then an upload - a batch upload if you like - of the files you would like to show. Viewbook’s simple interface lets you create the presentation as you like with simple editing and descriptors. Through the presentation editor you can choose background colors, layout, font sizes, font colors, and image sizes.

Viewbook understands how streamlined you may wish your presentation to be, so they have made it possible to place the thumbnail navigation bar on top, the right, or left to enhance the visual effect. Optional navigation bar, or full screen mode, allow for professional looking and minimal presentations. Presentations, which is Viewbook’s wording for a single portfolio or slideshow, can be bundled together to create pages that have multiple presentations. This is particularly useful if you are showcasing a portfolio with distinct sets of skills in each presentation. For example, a logo designer could use this to show logos in one presentation and screen captures in another; the possibilities are endless.

Multiple “websites,” or presentation pages are also possible with Viewbook’s drag-and-drop page creator. Drop in presentations, add in descriptions, and customize styles as you like. These features make Viewbook more like an basic online website creator than a slideshow manager, something that is enhanced by the ability to embed a Flash version of your presentation into a site of your choosing.

There are no options for editing images once they have been uploaded to Viewbook, though there is an easy way to batch edit descriptions. For the free version we found that options outside the pricing plans were few, most of them turned off to encourage subscription. The interface is genuinely simple, at times so sparse it felt empty and wanting, and when placing files, drag-and-drop was only way to modify the layout. If you are willing to use the basic functions of Viewbook with less than 100 images, Viewbook is a clever portfolio tool, but for most users the features that require subscription are the most desirable. Pricing plans are available beginning at $12 and with each jump in price there is a significant rise in features available. At the $12 level you can add a custom logo, add meta information for discovery, and use the full range of customizing features. The $24 a month option offers features one would associate with website hosting; analytics, custom domain names, personal logos, and downloads for clients.
