Jango: Music Suggestion And Networking
Let’s jump in. From the beginning Jango is off to a good start - there’s no download, and you don’t even need a login to get streaming music with suggestions. Jango will let you create a “station,” which is to say a starting point for your music playlist, and will cater the streaming music to that choice. Vote up or down with the emoticon icons near the top or forward to the next song with the track controls at top left.

To share and save your playlists you’ll have to sign in, and when you do the change is immediate. From the inside Jango looks like MySpace, a glossy and ad-pocked portal that puts much of what we expect from a music suggestion application up front. Find artists, play clips, and meet with friends. Song lists, simple artist bios, and the ubiquitous YouTube video clips let you pursue your musical inquiries and a Share button lets you email recommendations to a friend. All the while, under the info bar where the music is playing, there are four users who also like your choice. For suggestions for new music, or networking, Jango rotates the users while the music plays.
Initially Jango makes sweeping generalizations about music (a search for “Sinatra” led to a free-for-all of music including Tom Waits and the Mamas and the Papas), but after giving preferences Jango improves, isolating music choices by the profiles in Jango. This could be a turn-off for some, since finding new music means going through profiles or clicking through the player. There were also some issues of freezing with Firefox 3, which will hopefully be resolved soon.
For music networking and suggestion, you can find Jango and like applications with the search discover+music.
