Socializr: Invites and RSVPs With Social Tools
Socializr knows one thing for sure. All events are social. That’s why the invite and event tool has made itself more accessible to social networks, and has taken invitation creation to a new place.
Designed to help users manage guest lists and RSVPs, Socializr takes the simple event manager and builds on it with a variety of social tools. To get a better idea of these tools, let’s go through the process of making an event with Socializr.
Once you’ve signed into Socializr and click the “Create an Event” button you are offered the chance to choose from one of the templates grouped by theme. Don’t be put off if you don’t like what you see on that first page - you can just as easily make your own, and there are some interesting customizations waiting for you. We’ll start with a design of our own. Add your own background, center picture, or apply one of the pre-made themes. Socializr will prompt us to give the details of the event, from the time and date to our event message - all the standard stuff. At the bottom of the page are some new options: we can hide guest lists, hide comments, let guests bring other people, or set the maximum number of people we want to come.
Once we’ve filled in the details, Socializr brings up a page for us to add in extras we may want for our event. Add music from Imeem or your own collection, select video content from YouTube, import photos from Friendster, MySpace, or Flickr, change fonts, add Flash widgets, add a chatroom through Meebo, or even send guests to a payment site for paid events. All of these options will be incorporated into the invite that your guests receive, which lets you share the customizations you’ve made. The next step is to invite your guests, which can either be done individually or imported from a variety of address books. Socializr currently takes in addresses from Evite, Yahoo, Hotmail, Windows Live, AOL, Gmail, Outlook, and .csv files. When you are ready to send invites, there are options to be notified when guests respond or add a personal message by mail or SMS to your mobile.
The last stage in the creation of an event is to “View Event”, where you can see what your guests will receive and make any last-minute changes. It is the same screen that comes up whenever you click on the event in the dashboard, and is the place where you can see who has joined the event, and who has yet to reply. There are new options on this page as well, such as event statistics, copying the event (useful for recurring events), and saving your design. Guests can send the event to their phone, export to Outlook, and be removed from the guest list.
The detraction from Socializr may be just what makes it appealing to some users - Socializr is set up like a social network, with options to share events, photos of the event, make friends and message with them within the application. With social networks users can share events through their profiles in Facebook and Mypace, or use a Flash widget with event details in Friendster and MySpace (Share and Promote link). For some business users Socializr may appear too friendly, and not give the tone they want to impart for official functions, but for social users and users that wish to have personalized invites with guest list management, Socializr offers a range of options. To find Socializr or like applications, there is the Listio search events+manage.
