Comparing Event Management Applications: Eventbrite, Amiando, MadeIt, Eventsbot

November 14th, 2008

As we looked at the event management applications this week we were impressed by how simple it was to create an event and manage it - each of the applications could do this - yet there were some that stood above the rest. After the comparison we’ll talk some more about what we found, and you can find full reviews of the applications through the links in the chart. For an introduction to this category please see Managing Events With Web 2.0.

Navigation-wise, all of the applications were easy to move around, but Eventbrite, with its straightforward graphics and spacing was the most appealing. Links were placed intuitively, and more significantly, the left side navigation bar when editing an event put everything one click away.

Eventbrite and amiando both were heavier with features than the others, features that would please users with a need for detailed control. Both offered a better interface and options for detailed information gathering from attendees, not only supplying attendee reports, but allowing users to export the lists as csv files for future reference. Of the four only amiando and eventsbot offer email templates for invitations, and MadeIt has the least number of features of all of the applications.

Large events require promotion, and for this all of the applications offer discounted ticketing options, yet only Eventbrite has affiliate programs for cross marketing. All but MadeIt offer website integration (code) and premade buttons for links to their ticketing service, yet there is a lack of network and microblogging crossover to help promote across social networks. Amiando does have a more interactive approach - its attendee portal includes options to add photos and a wall for attendee comments - but this too only adds a page and is unlikely to promote the event.

Some of the applications had different features that may appeal to specific needs. For business users and social events, Eventbrite can generate attendee badges, outputting to PDF. Amiando’s incorporation of Flickr, YouTube, and the tabbed web page where you can add additional pages for splitting content on the attendee portal may appeal to web savvy audiences, and eventsbot’s extensive payment options may be of interest to events with open attendance.

As ticketing goes, all but MadeIt offered a wide variety of payment options, with the highest commission taken on ticket sales being Eventbrite and MadeIt (2.5%). Price caps of eventsbot ($7.95), MadeIt ($9.99) and Eventbrite ($9.99) help keep costs in line, but eventsbot (2%) is clearly a better deal for higher priced tickets, and amiando (1.5%) is for costs below eventsbot’s cap.

In the end, users are likely to find amiando and Eventbrite to fill most of their needs for recurring events, but may find the smaller commission and cap of eventsbot more attractive. To find these or other applications like it there is the Listio search: events+manage.
