MadeIt: Making Event Management Easy

November 10th, 2008

MadeIt LogoThis is the first review in our series of event management applications. For an introduction to this category, including a rundown of features common to all four applications reviewed this week, please see: Managing Events With Web 2.0.

MadeIt offers much of what makes event planning important; a chance to customize a webpage dedicated to your event, add maps, times, set currency, and manage tickets. MadeIt does this through simple tab navigation, breaking the event into two tabs which each have options on a sidebar. The product of this is a streamlined navigation that speeds the setup process. Just fill in the forms on the two tabs and your event is ready to go.

The main focus of MadeIt is in the unique url your create for your event (http://pro.madeit.com/youreventname), and MadeIt makes it possible to format your page with HTML, which allows users to import pictures, music, and videos in addition to modifying the text. This is also the page that attendees will see, so MadeIt has included a Google map mashup to help guide your attendees.

Ticketing is optional, but for users that are interested in ticketing, MadeIt asks a 2.5% commision on ticket sales. Payment services are handled through Google Merchant or PayPal. Discounts can be created through the sidebar with the Manage Discount link, where discounts are linked to ticket types. This does mean that if you want to apply a cross-the-board discount, say a 5% discount for referred customers, that you would have to recreate the discount for all ticket types (such as adult, child, and senior).

MadeIt Dashboard

The strength of MadeIt is in its simplicity - easy to navigate, simple set up, and all with basic functionality. Where it is lacking is in fine tuning and control; adding people directly into your event requires that they be entered as paying customers (no comp tickets), there is no address book or way to manage contacts minutely, and customers reaching your web page have only one option - get tickets. Users can create a questionnaire for attendees with custom questions (it will appear when they buy tickets), but overall MadeIt may be a put off for users looking to sculpt the attendee’s experience.
