MyLifeofTravel: Blog As Travel Journal
This is the second review in our series of travel applications that offer a journal. For an introduction to this category, including a rundown of features common to all four applications reviewed this week, please see: Travel Journals And Web 2.0.
Users looking for a more narrative form of travel journal may respond to MyLifeofTravel, which focuses most of its attention on blogging. Unlike some applications that break down travel information into tips and places, placing your trip details in prominence, MyLifeofTravel puts the blog first, with trip information becoming only a detail to the page.
The benefit of the blog-focused approach is that MyLifeofTravel can feel more human, and can be more engrossing than the detail-oriented approach. As most travel journals do, it offers a chance to keep dates and notes - a digital scrapbook of your travels. Places to add details about the trip, quick updates for friends, and a batch upload of photos are all available through the Create Trip link, but the main event is the journal, which is so valued that when you search for a topic, next to each person’s title is a bar measuring the length of the blog post.
For special features MyLifeofTravel has added two elements: an animated route of your travels, and the option to post videos as well. The animation is linked to your profile, and once initiated, animates the chronological path of your travels on a Google map mashup, showing the lead picture in thumbnail as it brings up that trip. It is an entertaining way to see how people travel, and any time that you would like to find out more about the trip, active links in the animation link to blog entries. MyLifeofTravel also offers an area with special listings for featured blogs and for users who are looking for travel partners.
The drawback to MyLifeofTravel is a poor search function. Keyword search is possible, but only once the city is chosen, which means that searching for “Pawpaw trees” will bring up only one city worth of results. This, in combination with an uncompelling graphic style may put off some users, but users that want more to read are likely to find MyLifeofTravel appealing. To find this or similar travel applications, there is the Listio search: travel+share.
