Veoh: Video Distribution With TV And Film
This is the second review in our series of online video distribution applications. For an introduction to this category, including a rundown of features common to all four applications reviewed this week, please see: Promoting and Distributing Video Content With Web 2.0.
As promoters and advertisers look to upload their content onto the web, they may see a particular advantage to Veoh. Veoh is not only a way to distribute videos, it’s a way to showcase them. In case you missed our earlier review of Veoh as a venue of TV, film, and video hosting, Veoh hosts user videos. Unlike YouTube (for the moment) and similar video hosting sites, Veoh has a worked in audience for video content, making distribution with Veoh an attractive option.
Among the distinctions Veoh allows you to make prior to upload are what the primary language and the subtitle language are, whether there is violence or nudity, and what the category should be, which Veoh has split into groups (news, music, and so on) for easier discovery. Once the upload screen is open, users can upload the video (by url, rss, or file) and specify the rights viewers have for commenting and sharing the video. Syndication - what Veoh calls publishing across networks - is possible with an additional click, and will send the video to YouTube, MySpace, Blogger, WordPress, and Google.
Promotion with Veoh, as mentioned before, is both enhanced by the Veoh media platform and hindered by its selective syndication. Users benefit from their video’s proximity to film and tv content, but as a way of distributing video across the web, six networks may not be enough for some users. That said, users with entertainment videos or a web series may find that the Veoh audience is a good fit.
Veoh also has tracking options, and while there are not as many outlets as some distribution services, Veoh lets users know about viewership, ratings, comments, and downloads (allowing viewers to download videos is an option during the setup). That’s the weak spot of Veoh - it’s not a one stop shop - but it does let you use categories, tags, and details to better place your video content. To find this application or others like it, there is the Listio search: manage+videos.
