DrinksMixer: Cocktail Recipes Organized As You Like
This is the second application in our series of reviews of web 2.0 cocktail applications. For an introduction to this category, including a rundown of features common to all four applications reviewed this week, please see: Taking In The New Year: Web 2.0 Cocktail Recipe Applications.
Hosted by the entertainment site CraveOnline, users looking for cocktails may mistake the ad-heavy DrinksMixer for only a promotional tool, but the recipe application has one of the largest collections of cocktails, from the homespun to the famous.
Once you’ve scrolled past the ads and signed in, you’ll see that DrinksMixer allows you to keep a list of your ingredients (My Cabinet), your recipes (My Handbook), and your comments (My Comments). Users can find drinks by category or search, and add them as they like, adding comments or finding similar cocktails through the linked recipes at the bottom. First time bartenders can find information with DrinkMixers’ guide to bartending, terminology, measurements, and glassware linked on the left sidebar.
One of the features of DrinksMixer is that users can organize their saved recipes into groups – a useful tool for users that want to come up with their own collections of recipes. An impressive number of drinking games has also been listed. Print options lets you print only the recipes you like with the information (glasses, amounts, etc.) you like. A widget is also available to import DrinksMixer into sites and social networks.
The weak spot of DrinksMixer, aside from the obtrusive ads, is that posting recipes is so easy that many recipes are homespun – not necessarily bad, but the variations may not appeal to dedicated cocktailers. At the time of this review the forums were not working, though the comment function allows discussion of each recipe.
