FlashcardDB: Learning With A System

December 16th, 2008

FlashcardDB Logo This is the second application in our series of web 2.0 flashcard application reviews. For an introduction to this category, including a rundown of features common to all four applications reviewed this week, please see: Online Flashcards: Using Web 2.0 To Learn.

FlashcardDB works differently than your standard “guess and turn over” flashcard application. Unlike other applications it works on the Leitner system, which if you missed our post, Online Flashcards: Using Web 2.0 To Learn, is a system of learning where incorrect answers are placed into the first deck that you review, whereas correct answers are placed in later decks so that you are reviewing what you don’t know more than what you do.

Because of this FlashcardDB puts emphasis on repetition, which it shows you in your dashboard. As you add decks of topics you want to learn, FlashcardDB will cue them up with the Leitner system, meaning that the what you know well gets pushed to the back for periodic review.

FlashcardDB Dashboard

Feature-wise FlashcardDB is only standard - there is tagging, search, and saving decks to your favorites, but there is only one way to see flashcards, which is the flip style. Users can copy and paste (csv) flashcards in and out of the application, and choose between studying individual decks (Study) or quizzing the whole collection (Review All), but users are likely to see FlashcardDB as a simple solution to their flashcard needs.

The benefit of FlashcardDB centers around its use of the Leitner system, but the navigation could be improved. There is no directory - instead there is only a list of recently used decks, and there is a reliance on tags to navigate across the application that does not allow for discovery. That said, the Leitner method is a good reason to take advantage of FlashcardDB.

FlashcardDB Tagging

To read more about FlashcardDB or to find similar flashcard applications there is the Listio search: flashcards+learn. To find other e-learning applications, there is the Listio tag, education.

Thanks for the writeup Listio! And thanks for emphasizing what I really wanted to emphasize at FlashcardDB: a solid Spaced Repetition System. You’ll see improved exploration tools, stats and “fun stuff” this year. I promise :) Take care, Jeff
