Making It On Your Own; Web 2.0 Recipe Applications

December 22nd, 2008

With the holidays fully upon us and the economy going through its fluctuations, more web 2.0 users are bringing their meal closer to the hearth. This week we’ll be looking at one way that users are doing that, with recipe applications.

These days there’s nothing that can’t be done online - and even grandma’s old cookbook has taken on a new life. This week’s applications - Foodari, Supercook, Open Source Food, and Reci-P - show the advantages that online recipe sites have over the old recipe outlets. In addition to easy readability (unless you’ve got flour on your monitor), recipe applications offer easier searching, ingredient matching, and social tools to share or discover. So put your feet up next to a warm router and settle in for some applications that could bring some warmth into your home with Listio’s series on recipe applications.

Common in all of the applications is the ability to search through a centralized database by ingredient or name. Anyone that’s had to go through several dogeared indexes in the back of their cookbooks knows what a time saver this is, but a search function can also help match a recipe to your ingredients on hand. Some applications go a step further and offer an ingredient matching function, one that allows the user to put in all of their ingredients (instead of just one) on hand and match it with a recipe with only those ingredients. Imagine being able to find a recipe that saves you from going to the store, at any time of day.

Simplicity is an important part of these applications. While some applications have an audience with a predisposition to the new web, recipe applications must appeal to all generations of people who love to cook, so all of the applications we’ll be looking at are straightforward, easy to understand, and use. Each will have its advantage, but all will offer users the chance to discover new recipes and find their favorites.

To get see these applications or others like it, there is the Listio search: recipes+discover.
