Publishing Magazines Online With Web 2.0
Internet users have long been used to the idea that they can publish themselves into blogs, but many may not realize the possibility that new publishing applications online offer, and how web 2.0 has given them new ways to express themselves and enjoy the work of others.
This week we’ll look at the applications Issuu, Calame’o, Magbook, and doXtop, all of which are applications that allow users to publish and find publications in magazine format. Aside from saving trees, the advantage to these applications is in their searchability, navigation, and not the least, price. Paper magazines are expensive to create, and once created, have a complicated system of distribution. Unlike their analog counterparts, these offshoots offer the benefits that only the web can offer: social ranking, tracking, and a wide audience.
Digital publications allow users to turn and mark pages, zoom, and view as many publications as they like (in contrast to most newsstands), as often as they like. Many applications have search functions within the reading page as well, allowing readers to find specific topics, and some have tools to help publishers construct the publication. They can be viewed at any time, and depending on the rights the author sets, reproduced in any quantity. They come in a variety of formats, including magazines, brochures, sales catalogs, annual reports, presentations, or even sheet music.
Naturally, there are business applications in addition to personal publishing possibilities. Organizations, from think tanks to hospitals can publish newsletters, policy papers, or anything they wish to share, and promote it to the public or a closed group. Paper magazines that are trying to promote their publication can use the publishing applications to entice new readers, and industry analysts can use them to put out white papers.
We’ll be covering the applications during the week, but if you’d like to get a head start on the subject, the applications can be found with the Listio search: publish+magazines.
