Taking In The New Year: Web 2.0 Cocktail Recipe Applications

December 29th, 2008

Thanks to a number of recent web 2.0 applications, taking in the New Year has never been easier, and users looking for more refined intoxication can find recipes for cocktails at any time with a connection online.

Connected to large databases of thousands of drink recipes, these applications let users get to the exact recipe that they want, pulling them by ingredient, keyword, or title. For the home bartender, or even the professional on the job, a cocktail application saves them from hunting through bartending books, letting them get to the most important thing, the cocktail. This week we’ll look at the applications CocktailDB, DrinksMixer, ExtraTasty, and Cocktail Builder and see how they each bring recipes to their users.

All of the applications had several ways to search for cocktails, ranging from ingredients to type, and many feature a suggestion engine that pulls out recipes from the database based on the mood and style the user prefers.

Some offer details about the drinking process (bartending, terminology, glassware, and the like), some have details about ingredients (including long forgotten ones), and one has a list of drinking games. Most allow users to rate and comment, and some allow users to keep a running list of their favorites.

If you would like to get a head start on the application theme from this week there is the Listio search: drinks.
