Web 2.0 For Musicians and Music Professionals

January 31st, 2009

Bands, scouts, and labels have long used social networks as a way to promote themselves or scout new talent, but what listeners and musicians may not be aware of are the applications designed specifically for new music. Anything from independent marketplaces to networks that combine social interaction with marketplaces (the Listio search music+business will give you a good sampling) are available - online and ready at any hour (yes, even after your gig).

For musicians looking to make the transition from semi-pro to pro, the tools we’ll be looking at this week are a way to get their footing in the industry, letting them collaborate on projects, promote, get feedback, and even sell tracks. Slicethepie, Indaba, and ReverbNation are music applications focused in a way that MySpace is not; where MySpace does have a music sampling widget that is popular among bands, it’s a social network for everyone and does not have the tools or marketplace that are common to the music artist network.

Common to these networks is a profile or artist page, tools to share music (players and widgets), recommendations for bands, as well as ways for scouts and music professionals to be involved. Fans of bands and listeners can enjoy sampling music and with some applications, give feedback to the bands. We’ll be talking in greater detail about the applications over the next few days, but if you would like to get a head start, there’s the Listio search: music+business.
