WeBook: Social Book Publishing
This is the first application of our series on book publishing. For a primer on the topic, there is our previous post: Online Publishing With Web 2.0.
Not all publishers take your book as is; however, there’s a new kind of publishing – one that’s very web 2.0. Social, interactive, and all online, WeBook brings your friends and the community together to publish.
If you’ve got your own project you can put it up on the block and try to get people to vote on it, but as many participants in WeBook have discovered, contributing to someone else’s project is just as fun. Once in the system, users will vote and comment on any contribution, and as the project collects votes they get closer to being published. It’s a collaborative process, but unlike most self publish options, there’s plenty of feedback to keep you on track.
WeBook, is, among other things, a social network, and so it has a lot of the social tools that one might expect. Under the tab for People users are able to see the active reviewers, writers, and groups (hint: getting these people to like your project is a great way to get published) so users can make those social connections. Forums are available for users to get tips, make connections, and there’s a toolbox for in-depth advice on the writing process. A WeBook store, in addition to Amazon and booksellers, is available for promotion, if you get to publishing.
The downside to WeBook is just what you would expect from a social publisher: people. There are a whole lot of them, all wanting to be published, and who have a lot to say. For this reason WeBook is well suited for projects where collaboration is inherent; short stories, poetry books, and other short format publications.
