Comparing Dating Applications: Psismic, Okcupid, and Crazy Blind Date

March 10th, 2009

For this set of reviews we looked at the dating applications Psismic, okcupid, and Crazy Blind Date, keeping in mind that there’s more than one way to meet that someone special. We’ll talk a bit more after the chart, but if you’d like a primer on the topic that introduces web 2.0 dating applications, there is our post, Dating and Web 2.0.

Since each of the applications has a different take on the dating process, users will find that each has its own set of ups and downs. We started with Psismic, which puts shared content first. By seeing what other people like, the developers posit, users can find people with shared humor, outlooks, and views – a different take than the direct matching many dating applications use. Users confident in their ability to express themselves may like Psismic the most.

The problem with this is that the matching engine is not very strong, since videos and blog posts are too hard to match. On the opposite side of the issue is okcupid, which uses lengthy tests of multiple choice (value tests) to give users a percentile of matching. For users that want more information and access, the messaging and tests of okcupid are going to be appealing.

Users who want immediate interaction, or who believe that the only way to know someone is to meet them are going to fall for Crazy Blind Date, which allows for users to meet as early as that day in dates, doubles, or the ambitious double blind date. The downside is that there is little information about the date with Crazy Blind Date, but users attracted to it are more than likely to like the mystery and risk.

Crazy Blind Date

A final mention should go to the application The Lek for dating in Los Angeles. Combining strong design, profiles, and matching, The Lek’s innovation comes with its integration of local events, giving users a place AND a person to meet. If you would like to find these or similar applications, there is the Listio search: dating.
