Mailchimp: Newsletters With Options

March 25th, 2009

This is the third of our series on web 2.0 newsletter applications. To see a primer on the topic, please see our earlier post, Using Web 2.0 Applications To Get The Word Out: Newsletter Applications.

Mailchimp is a full service newsletter application that handles your email list, enable you to craft custom letters, and track them. For businesses, nonprofits, or any organization wanting to keep people in the know, MailChimp offers one stop service.

The most notable feature of MailChimp is a clean, easy-to-intuit design that crosses all of its pages. Campaigns are simple to create, and there are a number of options, from plain text, html, RSS driven, A/B split campaigns, as well as a test function to let users quickly test their mail across various mail clients. This is followed with extensive support, in the form of tutorials and explanations for every step of email campaigning.

Everything users need to create their newsletter is within a click in MailChimp, including picture editing with Piknik, image upload (they store them for you), or html editing tools that allow users to customize their mail completely. Once users have gone through the five step process and are ready to check their letter, MailChimp’s Inbox Inspector (additional fees apply) or a trial email (no charge) helps ensure the letter will be accepted. Tracking is possible with Google Analytics, which can track the newsletter’s effectiveness (by showing the number of recipients that click through to the user’s website).

There aren’t many downsides to MailChimp, but it isn’t free. Monthly plans (500 mails) begin at $10, and Pay-As-You-Go accounts ask for prepayments (they begin at 3 cents per mail, which gets lower with higher volumes). Even with the cost though, MailChimp is an effective tool for newsletters that’s easy to use and easy to control.

To find this or other applications like it, there is the Listio search:  create+newsletters.
