Okcupid: Interactive Dating Application

As with most dating applications, okcupid is designed to bring you closer to people you want to meet, but okcupid adds tests on top of the usual tools to make searching fun and interactive.

Searches, messages, matching by preferences (over 300 questions), and geographic limits (okcupid is international with full language support, so it’s important to have this) are common to dating applications, but in addition to these functions okcupid adds interactive tests (created by others or you), instant messaging, favorites lists where you can stalk privately or let them know, and posts (they call them journals).

The benefit of the wide variety of ways to meet people is that users can get a feel for what other daters and friends like while at the same time giving them activities to flirt over. Taking a custom test, say the “Are you a robot, monkey, or pirate?” test, for example, not only gives you an idea of the creator’s sense of humor, but with the quick link to their profile, puts you in contact. Dots with red or green also let users know if that person replies often or not.

If there is a downside to okcupid, it would be that it can be overwhelming and some users may feel that in order to use it they must fill in every test, but as users soon see, most users do not. The upside to okcupid is the number of people that use it (11,000+ at the time of this review) and that users are screened, through the questions and custom tests, to find a good match.
