Fontstruct: Finding and Making Fonts With Web 2.0
This is the second review in our series of web-based font applications. To see a primer on the topic, please see our post, Web 2.0 Typography: Font Applications.
Font applications have a great many uses, from finding, sharing, and buying fonts, but Fontstruct adds one other feature that is sure to appeal; with Fontstruct you can create fonts.
Creating custom fonts in Fontstruct is done with Fontstruct’s inline graphic tool, which not only allows pixel control for each letter (caps and lower case), but also adds shape options for each pixel. Rounded, triangular, and partial blocks give users the chance to customize fonts to their specifications. Using this tool font construction is easy, and the tool lets users see adjacent characters to help keep the design flowing.
Of course there may not be time (or motivation) to create a font, in which case users can search fontstruct for fonts by keyword, category, or tag. Depending on the creator, fonts can be modified (cloned and edited) with their graphic tool, downloaded, or purchased. Fontstruct has been developed from the FontShop, where professional font designers sell fonts of every type (pun intended).
Users can evaluate fonts with the Gallery preview, as well as see the ratings, comments, number of downloads, and number of glyphs (that’s letters or characters to you and me). Font creators are also given their own pages, so that if users find a designer they like, they can easily track other fonts.
A drawback to fontstruct is that users can’t see a list of categories or tags (helpful for suggestions), but with the search bar most users will be able to find useful fonts. To find other applications like this one, there is the Listio search: find+fonts.
